Agree with you, except for how Substack allows you to bump into interesting people and get to know them. This feels like what the internet always promised. Not flashing billboards but real connections.
This is actually so interesting and I have definitely noticed it too. I think it also might be due to the professionalism of social media (esp. instagram) so ppl don’t post as much because they feel it has to aesthetic or perfect… idk tho. Thank you for this🙏🏾
Oh, totally agree. Social media has become very curated and aestheticized so it's hard to relate/connect to the content some people post and makes it more intimidating to post genuine, unedited type of stuff.
This is great. I personally deleted all SM a few years ago and never looked back. IG, FB, Snap.. all gone. I got tired of feeling like I had to keep up with people that I hadn't seen in years. People I went to HS with 15 years ago don't need to know what I ate for lunch or where I'm going on vacation. The people that I do know and keep in touch with have my phone number, and we keep in touch that way.
With that being said, I ran into a friend of a friend recently, and she asked me if I was still on IG. I said no and that I got rid of it a while ago. She told me that I wasn't missing anything because it was like a ghost town. She said no one posts anymore. It's all brands and influencers.
I have a Reddit account, a TikTok and now my Substack. No one irl knows about them and I purposely don't connect my contacts to things like Substack. I guess I like to meet strangers because I don't know as much about them. A lot of the irl people started to overshare, and I learned things about them against my will. Like, I don't need to see your kid potty training in your stories, or a video of you making celery juice for the 3rd time in one day. I can easily unfollow a stranger and not feel bad about it I guess!
I like the idea of only following strangers and cutting ties with people you might've known at some point whose lives you don't care to be apart of and vice versa. It feels almost like a fresh start and you're right, the oversharing gets tiring at times.
i feel this way about insta too— i even see it in myself, thinking “i cant post about this because i just posted my graduation last week”, or trying to find the perfect song for a post that says im cool but not trying too hard, or feeling embarrassed to comment on posts that i have thoughts about. one of my friends and i have been pointing out that we’re following these “fake instagram rules” for no reason. trying to break out of that, because who cares about fake aesthetic instagram?

Substack is a really great place to meet like-minded people, you're right. Definitely doesn't have that toxicity of typical social media sites.
